Sayre, and three companions, made an unauthorized Alpine-style attempt on Everest via the North Col in 1962, prior to the large, successful American expedition in 1963. This is a most interesting read which is often missed in the depth of Everest literature. Copies signed by expedition member Hansen are very rare. This particular copy has interesting inscriptions to someone who appears to have helped the expedition.
