Andrew Watson, Alexander Kennedy, and Charles Harrisson were members of the little-known eight-man Western Base Party, led by Frank Wild, on Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14). They were deposited 2000km west of the Main Base by the ship Aurora on the Shackleton Ice Shelf of Queen Mary Land in Febuary 1912 and recovered in February 1913. Watson was a geologist, Kennedy a magnetician, and Harrisson a biologist, also serving as expedition artist. During their year away from the Main Base the party conducted scientific and meteorological observations in addition to making numerous discoveries during the course of two exploratory sledging journeys. This is the first publication of Watson’s and Kennedy’s diaries which are important additions to the history of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Harrisson’s diary was previously published by Heather Rossiter under the title ‘Mawson's Forgotten Men’. Presented here are wonderful examples of his paintings and drawings. This is a lovely, limited-edition, boxed set of 300 copies.
