Captain Lawrence ‘Titus’ Oates, on Capt. Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition (1910-13), was a member of the polar party which arrived at the South Pole after Roald Amundsen. On their return from the pole, only miles short of their resupply at One Ton Depot, it was Oates who crawled bootless out of the tent and into a raging -40°C blizzard. He left with the words “I am just going outside and may be some time.” It was his 32nd birthday. Photographer: Herbert Ponting.
