Crean was an Irish seaman and member of three major Antarctic expeditions - Scott’s National Antarctic Expedition (1901-04), Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition (1910-13), and Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-17). His contributions to these expeditions sealed his reputation as a polar explorer and earned him the Albert Medal for Lifesaving and three Polar Medals.
In this work, Hirzel concludes his trilogy on Crean back at the beginning with Scott’s first expedition which made the first balloon ascent on the continent, several overland sledge journeys, and achieved a new furthest south of 82°16.5’S. Crean was noted for being a strong sledge-hauler, logging 149 days in harness, and for his sense of humor and even temper.
