Porter served as astronomer, scientist, surveyor and cartographer, and artist over the course of 18 years in the Arctic regions to Greenland, Franz Josef Land, northern British Columbia, and Labrador. He was with 10 Arctic expeditions from 1894 – 1912, journeying with Frederick Cook and Robert Peary. His diary, composed in 1930-31, relates his experiences.
