The 2008 climbing season on K2 ended up being even more tragic than that of 1996. In the end, 11 climbers lost their lives, eight of whom had reached the summit. Van Rooijen, veteran of two prior K2 expeditions, was the leader of the Dutch Norit K2 team. A series of events delayed reaching the summit when, upon descent, a serac fell from above the Bottleneck cutting the fixed ropes below. Van Rooijen, trapped above the Bottleneck, spent three days in the Death Zone and was feared lost. Although he survived, the price was high as he ended up losing his toes. This is one of ten books which covered the 2008 events on K2. In English.
