Van Rooijen is one of Holland’s top mountaineers. He became the first Dutch person to reach the North Pole (1997), the South Pole (2000), and the summit of Everest (2002 and 2004, both without supplemental oxygen). This covers these four expeditions as well as to Mount Kenya (1996) and K2 (where he was seriously injured, 1995). Van Rooijen had hoped to fly from the summit of Everest during both his climbs.
