Harlin was just nine when his acclaimed father was killed in a fall while attempting the direttissima of the notorious Eiger in 1966. Having promised his mother to not become an alpine climber, he held off the pull of the mountain until 2005 when, with an experienced team and IMAX cameras, he faced the mountain for himself.
Winner 2007 Banff Mountain Book Festival James Monroe Thorington Award for Best Work of Mountaineering History and shortlisted for the 2008 Boardman-Tasker Award.
