Somervell was the doctor on the 1922 and 1924 British Everest expeditions, climbed in the Kangchenjunga region after leaving Everest in 1922 and again in 1928, attempted to reach Nanda Devi in 1926 (eight years before Shipton and Tilman’s exploration), and was president of the Alpine Club. Bill Hackett (1918 – 1999) had a long list of mountaineering and polar achievements including numerous expeditions to McKinley, the continental high points, and north and south poles.
