The historic 1958 first ascent of Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak, 26,470') was the only American first ascent of an 8000er. Andy Kauffman and Pete Schoening reached the summit. Leader Nick Clinch’s marvelous book describes the formation of the small expedition team, the route to the mountain, the buildup to the summit attempt, and their eventual success. Schoening is also known for his famous belay which saved the team of the 1953 American K2 expedition. Copies signed by Clinch and Schoening are rare.
