The story of the early Swiss guides employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway at the turn of the century. These guides did much to open up the Canadian Alps. Kauffman made the first ascent of Hidden Peak, together with Pete Schoening, in 1958. Putnam, a long-standing member of the American Alpine Club, is the sole trustee of the Lowell Observatory, the world's largest private astronomical research observatory. Putnam has personalized this copy of his book to Arthur Vaughan, long associated with the Mount Wilson Observatory.
