Messner’s Scarcest Book

Reinhold Messner’s scarcest book. In 1970, Messner, along with his brother Gunther, was a member of Karl Herrligkoffer’s large Sigi Low Memorial Expedition to Nanga Parbat’s Rupal Face. Although successful in reaching the summit, Reinhold’s first 8000er, the expedition was marred by the death of Gunther during his descent with Reinhold via a different route. Herrligkoffer wrote his book, ‘Kampf und Sieg am Nanga Parbat’, noting that it was the ‘authentic expedition report’. When Messner wrote this book, in which he accuses Herrligkoffer of incompetence and blames him for Gunther’s death, Herrligkoffer, noted for his dictatorial expedition conduct, initiated court proceedings against Messner resulting in the removal of the book from circulation and the destruction of virtually all copies. In 2002, Messner once again addressed the issues in ‘The Naked Mountain’. He places principal blame for the death of his brother on Felix Kuen and Peter Scholz, both of whom have died in the mountains. The publication of this recent book caused an immediate, and very public, controversy resulting in two other expedition members writing their own accounts to rebut Messner’s version (Kienlin ‘Die Überschreitung’ and Saler ‘Zwischen Licht und Schatten’) and more court action. This is a complicated story and certainly a sad ending to an important expedition. Quite scarce. In German, no English translation.
