Hardie was a member of Edmund Hillary’s 1954 Baruntse expedition and in 1955 was one of those who made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga. Following this climb he and his wife Enid stayed in the Khumbu region for a number of months living with the Sherpa people.

This copy was owned by Barry Bishop who was the glaciologist and climatologist for Hillary’s Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition (1960-61) on which he made the first ascent of Ama Dablam. He was also a member of the American Everest Expedition (1963) on which he reached the summit with Lute Jerstad.
